Can you tell the difference?
The biggest and clearest
difference can be seen on the chin and the "eyeglasses",
the rims around the eyes. The kitten
on the left shows these areas sandycoloured, but the
kitten on the right shows them in white.
These are exemples of Maine Coon kittens, but this
colorphenomenon can be found with any catbreed (or non-breed) that sports the
red colour.
The examples above are
quite clear, but generally the difference is not easy to see.
For one, the colour may also vary with age and the season.
Then, some kittens "start" tabby, but grow darker in
maturing.
Here is my own Extra Orange as
a kitten. Her solid colour is less clear and was suspected
to be red-smoke (her dad is a cream-smoke) She is
genetically a mackerel, does have very little marking and
is quite light in colour.
Here she is, as and adult:
Showing the animal "live" to an
experienced judge can be helpful, but these days one can
also have the cat tested genetically.
Please go to the Links-page
for links of Laboratories that do these tests.
